How the nakshatra calculator works
The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each, starting from Ashwini at 0° Aries. We find the Moon's exact sidereal longitude at your birth (Lahiri ayanamsa) and see which nakshatra and pada it falls in. That is your birth star.
What your nakshatra tells you
- Dasha: the lord of your nakshatra rules your first Vimshottari dasha, and the rest of the sequence follows from it.
- Naming: each pada has a syllable used to choose a baby's name. Read about newborn Kundli and naming letters.
- Matching: Nadi, Gana, Yoni and Tara in guna milan all come from the nakshatra.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find my nakshatra by date of birth?
Enter your date, time and place of birth above. Your birth nakshatra (janma nakshatra) and its pada appear at the top of the result. It is the nakshatra the Moon was in when you were born.
Do I need the birth time to find my nakshatra?
It helps. The Moon spends about one day in each nakshatra, so on many dates the nakshatra changes during the day. Without a time, the result may be off by one nakshatra.
What is a nakshatra pada?
Each nakshatra is split into four quarters called padas, of 3°20′ each. The 108 padas each have a naming syllable, and the pada also sets your navamsa sign.
What is my nakshatra used for?
It sets the start of your Vimshottari dasha, gives the traditional first letter for a name, and decides six of the eight kootas in Kundli matching.
