Newborn Kundli: How to Make Your Baby's Birth Chart
Published
In this article
A newborn Kundli (janam kundali for a baby) is the birth chart made from your baby’s date, time and place of birth. Families usually want it for three things: the baby’s rashi and nakshatra, the naming letter for the namkaran ceremony, and a first look at the chart. Here’s how to make one and read the basics.
What you need
| Detail | Where to get it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Date of birth | Birth certificate | Sets the planets’ positions |
| Exact time of birth | Hospital discharge summary or birth record | Sets the Lagna and houses, which change about every 2 hours |
| Place of birth | City or town | Sets the time zone and the rising sign |
Use the time written by the hospital, not a remembered one. A few minutes can change the Lagna for babies born near a changeover.
Step 1: make the chart
Make a free Kundli with the baby’s details. You will see:
- Lagna (ascendant) and the chart in North or South Indian style
- Moon sign (rashi) and nakshatra with pada
- Planet positions, houses and the Vimshottari dasha the baby is born into
Step 2: find the rashi and nakshatra
The rashi is the Moon’s sign and the nakshatra is the Moon’s lunar mansion. These two are what families mean by “the baby’s star”. See the full list of 27 nakshatras for each one’s lord and nature.
Step 3: find the naming letter (namakshar)
Each nakshatra has four padas, and each pada has one traditional starting syllable. Find the baby’s nakshatra and pada in the Kundli, then the syllable:
| Example nakshatra | Pada 1 | Pada 2 | Pada 3 | Pada 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ashwini | Chu | Che | Cho | La |
| Rohini | O | Va | Vi | Vu |
| Pushya | Hu | He | Ho | Da |
| Hasta | Pu | Sha | Na | Tha |
| Shravana | Khi (Ju) | Khu (Je) | Khe (Jo) | Kho (Gha) |
| Revati | De | Do | Cha | Chi |
The full chart of all 108 syllables, grouped by rashi, is in our rashi by name guide. Many families choose a name that starts with the exact pada syllable. Others pick any syllable of the same nakshatra or rashi.
Step 4: the dasha at birth
The baby is born into the Vimshottari dasha of their nakshatra lord. For example, a baby with Moon in Rohini starts in the Moon’s dasha, and one in Pushya starts in Saturn’s. The Kundli shows how many years of that first dasha remain.
Gand Mool nakshatra: what it really means
If the Moon is in Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula or Revati, the baby is said to be born in a Gand Mool nakshatra. These six sit where a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) meets a fire sign (Leo, Sagittarius, Aries).
Tradition recommends a Mool shanti puja, commonly done on the 27th day after birth when the Moon returns to the same nakshatra. About 2 in 9 babies are born under these nakshatras, so it is very common. It’s a family custom, not a prediction of harm, and there’s no need to worry or spend heavily on it.
A gentle note on predictions
A baby’s chart describes potential, not a fixed future. Avoid anyone who uses a newborn Kundli to scare parents into costly remedies. Enjoy it as a family tradition and a keepsake.

Frequently asked questions
What details do I need for a newborn Kundli?
The baby's date of birth, exact time of birth (from the hospital record if possible) and the city of birth. Time matters most, because the Lagna changes about every two hours.
How do I find my baby's name letter from the Kundli?
Look at the baby's Moon nakshatra and pada in the Kundli. Each pada has one traditional starting syllable (namakshar). For example, Rohini pada 1 gives 'O', pada 2 'Va', pada 3 'Vi' and pada 4 'Vu'.
What is Gand Mool nakshatra?
Ashwini, Ashlesha, Magha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Revati are called Gand Mool nakshatras because they sit at the junction of a water sign and a fire sign. Tradition suggests a simple Mool shanti puja, often on the 27th day when the Moon returns to the same nakshatra. It is a custom, not a sign of bad luck.
When should a newborn Kundli be made?
Any time after birth. Many families make it within the first 11 days, before the naming ceremony (namkaran), so the name can follow the baby's nakshatra syllable.
