How Kundli matching works

Kundli matching, also called Kundli milan or guna milan, compares the Moon sign and nakshatra of the boy and girl across eight areas called kootas. Each koota carries points, adding up to 36 gunas.

KootaPointsWhat it checks
Varna1Temperament and spiritual outlook
Vashya2Mutual attraction and influence
Tara3Health and wellbeing of the couple
Yoni4Physical and intimate compatibility
Graha Maitri5Friendship between the Moon sign lords
Gana6Nature: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa
Bhakoot7Family welfare and prosperity
Nadi8Health and children

Matching by name vs by date of birth

Matching by date, time and place of birth uses the exact Moon position, so it gives the correct nakshatra, the right Vashya for split signs, and a Mangal dosha check. Matching by name uses the first sound of each name, the way names are traditionally chosen from the birth nakshatra. It is quick, but only as accurate as the name's link to the real birth star.

Frequently asked questions

How many gunas should match for marriage?

Out of 36 gunas, 18 or more is traditionally acceptable, 24 to 32 is considered very good, and above 32 is excellent. Families also check Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal dosha, not only the total.

Can I do Kundli matching by name only?

Yes. Switch to "By name only". We take the first syllable of each name (namakshar) to find the nakshatra and rashi, then calculate the 36-guna score. It is less precise than matching by date and time of birth.

What are the 8 kootas?

Varna (1 point), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8), adding up to 36 gunas.

What is Nadi dosha?

Nadi dosha happens when both partners have the same nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya), giving 0 out of 8 points. Traditional texts list exceptions, such as the same rashi with different nakshatras.

Is Mangal dosha checked?

When you match by birth details, we show whether each partner is Manglik, counted from the Lagna and the Moon. Name matching cannot check Mangal dosha.

Guna milan is a traditional practice. Use it as one input among many, not as the only basis for a marriage decision.
