How the ascendant is calculated

We work out the local sidereal time at your birthplace for your exact birth moment, including the time zone and daylight saving rules in force that day. From that we find the ecliptic degree rising in the east, then apply the Lahiri ayanamsa to get the sidereal sign. Read more about what your Lagna means.

What to do with your Lagna

  • Count the 12 houses from it: the Lagna sign is the 1st house.
  • Find the Lagna lord, the planet that rules your rising sign, and see which house it sits in.
  • Follow the six steps in how to read a Kundli.

Not sure of your birth time? Your Moon sign and nakshatra are much less sensitive to time.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ascendant (Lagna)?

The ascendant, called Lagna in Vedic astrology, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It becomes your 1st house, so it sets the layout of your whole chart.

Why do I need my exact birth time?

The ascendant moves through all 12 signs in about 24 hours, roughly one sign every two hours. If you were born near the change of a sign, even a few minutes can change it.

Is the Vedic ascendant different from the Western rising sign?

Often, yes. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac, so your Vedic Lagna is frequently one sign earlier than your Western rising sign.

What is the difference between Lagna and rashi?

Lagna is the rising sign and depends on the birth time and place. Rashi is the Moon sign and depends mainly on the date. Both are shown in your result.

Astrology is a traditional belief system. This result is for guidance and self-reflection, not professional advice.
