12 Houses in Kundli: What Each House Means
Published
In this article
A Kundli (birth chart) is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. It is divided into 12 houses, called bhavas. Each house looks after one area of life, such as career, marriage or money. When astrologers say “Saturn is in your 7th house”, they mean Saturn was in the part of the sky that rules partnerships when you were born.
This guide explains what each house means, how the houses are grouped, and how to find them in your own chart.
How to find the houses in your Kundli
The 1st house starts from your lagna (ascendant), the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. That is why an accurate birth time matters: the lagna changes roughly every two hours. The other 11 houses follow in order.
How the houses are drawn depends on the chart style:
- North Indian chart (diamond shape): the houses stay in fixed places. The 1st house is the top-centre diamond, and the houses run anticlockwise from there. The numbers you see written inside are sign numbers (1 = Aries, 2 = Taurus and so on), not house numbers.
- South Indian chart (square grid): the signs stay in fixed boxes. Pisces is top-left and the signs run clockwise, with Aries next to it. The lagna is marked with a diagonal line or “Asc”, and that box is your 1st house.

What each house means
1st house: you
The lagna house describes your body, temperament and general direction in life. The sign here, and any planet sitting in it, colours how others see you. Astrologers read the strength of the 1st house and its lord before anything else, because a strong lagna supports the whole chart.
2nd house: wealth and family
This house shows money you save, family values, your voice and way of speaking, and eating habits. It is also linked to early education within the family.
3rd house: courage and effort
The 3rd house rules willpower, initiative, younger brothers and sisters, writing, media and short journeys. Planets here show how much effort you put into getting what you want.
4th house: home and mother
Your mother, home life, land, houses, vehicles and emotional comfort sit here. A peaceful 4th house is linked with inner contentment.
5th house: children and intelligence
The 5th house covers children, learning, creativity, love affairs and purva punya, the good karma carried from past lives. It is one of the most auspicious houses in the chart.
6th house: obstacles and service
Illness, debts, enemies and competition belong to the 6th house, but so does the ability to overcome them. It is important for jobs in service, law, medicine and competitive exams.
7th house: marriage and partnership
The 7th house is the main house for marriage and the nature of your spouse. It also covers business partners and contracts. It is checked closely in Kundli matching, along with the position of Mars for Mangal dosha.
8th house: transformation
The 8th house relates to longevity, sudden changes, research, secrets, insurance and inheritance. It is often feared, but it also shows depth, resilience and interest in the occult.
9th house: luck and dharma
Fortune, higher learning, religion, teachers, long-distance travel and, in many traditions, the father, all come under the 9th house. A strong 9th house is a classic sign of good luck.
10th house: career
Profession, public image, authority and achievements are seen here. Planets in the 10th house are among the most visible in a person’s life.
11th house: gains
Income, profits, social circles, elder siblings and the fulfilment of desires sit in the 11th house. Most planets are considered to give good results here.
12th house: letting go
Expenses, losses, hospitals, foreign settlement, sleep, charity and spiritual liberation (moksha) belong to the 12th house. It is the house of endings that make room for new beginnings.
How houses are grouped
Astrologers group houses to judge strength quickly:
- Kendra (angular) houses: 1, 4, 7, 10. The pillars of the chart. Planets here are strong and act visibly.
- Trikona (trine) houses: 1, 5, 9. The most auspicious houses, linked with luck and merit.
- Dusthana houses: 6, 8, 12. Houses of difficulty. Planets here can bring challenges, though they also teach.
- Upachaya houses: 3, 6, 10, 11. Houses of growth. Difficult planets such as Saturn and Mars tend to improve here over time.
When the lord of a kendra and the lord of a trikona combine, the result is a Raja yoga, one of the best-known yogas for success.
Reading a house: three things to check
To judge any house, look at:
- The sign in the house, and where its ruling planet (the house lord) sits.
- Planets placed in the house, and whether they are friendly, strong or weak there.
- Aspects (drishti) from other planets onto the house.
A house with a well-placed lord and supportive planets tends to give good results in that area of life, especially during the dasha (planetary period) of related planets.
